There's this defacto rule of /lit/ that no one has actually ever read a book.
It's a bit of a joke but there is value to this.
Firstly it makes a book club very accessible because if everyone else is already larping then you don't have to read any books to be a part of the club you just have to convincingly larp as literate.
There's also this dick measuring thing people can do where they site some kind of esoteric knowledge from a really long book that very convincingly proves either they cherry picked the story or they actually read through it and had a personal connection with it.
Either was asserting that despite all evidence someone might provide /lit/ doesn't read will mean that someone providing this esoteric knowledge will have to actually make sure it's pertinent and it never actually is.
I'm wondering how far this could actually go and with what other practices.
Doctors and lawyers already do something similar where they will cut into someone's heart or defend someone they know is a murderer and just go "i'm only practicing, I'm not actually a doctor or a lawyer".
At that point it's hard to say if it's just some kind of scapegoating thing but I doubt it's that when the doctors and lawyers still have to live with their "practicing" even if they aren't "truly" a doctor or lawyer.
/lit/ is a joke. Perhaps the worst place for literature related discussion. Most average people know more about English literature than the people on /lit/.
FUCK YOU ROBERT THE FUCKING HYPOCRITE YOUR A FUCKING PSEUDO-INTELLECTUAL FAGGOT WHO NEEDS TO FUCKING GET THE FUCK OFF OF HIS COCKSUCKING DICKBENDING HIGH HORSE ALL YOU FUCKING DO IT SIT ON HERE ALL DAY FUCKING LONG AND MAKE RETARDED FUCKING POSTS ABOUT SOME FUCKING BULLSHIT YOU SAW AND DIDNT FUCKING LOOK ANY DEEPER INTO THAN FUCKING SURFACE FUCKING LEVEL AND DREW SOME STUPID FUCKING RETARD SCHIZOPHRENIC ASS CONCLUSION FROM GO GET FUCKED
"Pseudo-intellectual" is one of the most overused terms on the web. In academic circles, calling somebody a pseudo-intellectual will only earn you relentless mockery rather than praise for going against the current. For the record, I don't think this is a particularly good thing, and this attitude tends to poison intellectual conversations, but the use of this term only goes to show that you're unserious.

Hyperbole notwithstanding, I think this forum consists of more educated people than 4chan.
