Fuck the Russians, mine all the gold
I think the time for gold panning is long past. As for squatting, the best way would be to not disturb the land so as to make your presence noticed, and to continually move from place to place while also avoiding infrastructure.
If you want to sustainably live off the grid, then you will have to make a substantial amount of monetary savings in order to afford doing so until you can either turn a profit or transcend to total self-sustainability. Nevertheless, there are several online resources in order to do so. I personally recommend this video by Luke Smith, even though it's not geared towards "off-grid" living, because it contains several important things of note if you truly wish to move out to the country.
The solution isn't a cabin in the woods. The important thing is sovereignty and that's a hard thing to get when all of the land has been claimed. You don't have to do something that drastic. There are many towns with only 200-300 people that you and people aligned with you could have control over. No need for the running from rangers stuff unless that's a kink you have.
