Predator and Prey

Evolution and the idea of natural selection used as a framework for the biological world and why one animal lives instead of others relies upon this idea of fitness. Fitness in this sense is not the ability to run fast or jump high but whatever adaptations an organism makes to improve the likelihood their genes are passed on. This means that the adaptations an organism makes to one environment are dependent upon that environment. Were the organism in a different environment it would not be as successful because the adaptations might not lead to success. We can see this with athletes of specific sports how they will generally be of a specific build that best suits that competition. The problem one inevitably comes to when you think about these things for long enough is what environment are humans adapting to so we could better understand what our most meaningful definition of fitness would be. Having pondered this long enough I have found an explanation that appears most resilient. The strangest thing about humans is that we don’t fall within the categorization of predator or prey. Great apes in general have this difficulty. Looking at the greatest threats for great apes unlike every other group great apes have the highest risk of being killed by members of their own species. Among great apes the most violent great ape to their own species is humans. This informs something very novel and very troubling. That what makes great apes special is that we have evolved to artificially create evolutionary pressure. What’s troubling is that the reason humans are so exceptional is because we’re really good at applying that pressure. The way this works depends upon religious and secular cycles. What is important to understand is the difference between a secular and religious age is if there are many predators or many prey. When there are many predator type humans who are very willing to remove unfit humans this is a religious age. When there are many prey type humans who want to avoid people dying it is a secular age. Religiosity increases after a war, people get a taste for it and become comfortable with the idea and the utility of removing unfit humans. Secularity precedes a war. People are unwilling to create any conflict allowing more people to become a part of society until there is a breaking point. Religious societies thus lead to less death being that conflicts are resolved and unfit people are removed efficiently. Secular societies lead to great losses of life because they create a glut of unfit people. This reflects the predator prey cycle that exists in non-human ecosystems. The predators eat too many prey and the number of predators fall. With fewer predators the population of prey rises. With so much prey the predators eat well and increase in number. The predators eat too many and the number of predators fall.
